supposta
23 04 2008This is based on the banana bread i baked, which is not bread-shaped but flat and rectangular, for i’ve no loaf pan, only my 13 by 9 or something sized pan in which i bake all things cake, ’loaf’- and casserole like. My house smells like bananas. It’s a warm smell, like sunshine would smell if i were The Lord, but i’m not the Lord so’m'yeah, and if it would ever freaking shine here again. Anyway, it contradicts the bluster and gray and wet and blah outside.
It’s what i’m supposta do. i mean, i don’t mind it. i like it when i scratch something out in the kitchen and my family is impressed and happy and grateful. Today, the girls will walk in from school and i’ll offer them some of this warm banana rectangle with a glass of milk and for a moment, i’ll be such a good mom, like i’m supposed to be- cleaning, baking, doting, caring, calm, soft in body and voice, reeking with common sense.
And mashed, almost nasty, warm banana.
But for now, it’s just me, the smell of sunshine, our loudass refrigerator and my thoughts. My crazy, banana-laced thoughts. And i’m thinking i’ve done something i’m supposed to do, as a mother at home. i consider devouring the pan myself, but decide to take a nap instead-
the delightful, simple reprieve of homemaking.

Wonderful imagery.
I love the smell banana rectangle and I dont make it as often as I’d like. Your day sounds like a lovely one. I do hope you enjoy your banana rectangle.
One tip: warm up a piece and put a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Yummmm!
It’s gone now. It was tasty while it lasted.
i wasn’t able to do the ice cream- though that sounds delicious and hopefully next time we can try that.
My days would be even lovelier if the sun would shine on some of them.
Of course, i’ll be complaining when it gets hot.
Thanks.

You have to soak up those non-mom moments, soak then with inspiration and cat naps. Love it.
PS. I hate the smell of bananas, hot ripe ones….. eeewwww!
Yeah, it was verging on overwhelming, but i liked it.
i love naps. They are a necessary part of my functioning.
Everyone should take naps when they can.
Thank you for reading and commenting.
Your blog looks promising and i look forward to your future posts.

i agree. carpe nap-em.
that’s my creed.
banana bread’s okay. i like it even. but i’d knock someone down for some zuccini bread.
luckily it’s never come to that.
i love zucchini bread.
My ava’s is the best.
She hasn’t made it for a few years though, sad.
She also makes a lovely and rich date bread.
My ava is not much of a cook, but she truly blesses bread.
My favoritest bread though is my mom’s massa sovada- which is portuguese sweet bread.
It’s similar to hawaiian sweet bread only massa sovada does not use evaporated milk or lemon.
It is so fluffy and buttery and delicious!
No one else in our family makes it and she has no recipe- just her fingers and guts. She’s supposed to direct me this August when the children and i go for a visit.
Cross your fingers…

It’s good when the s’posed-to’s lead to something yummy to eat. And there is nothing better than the smell of baked goods on a gray and rainy day. Of course the nap is the ultimate in motherly, house wifery treats and get them while you can, my dear.

i agree.
But now, i’m tired.
Everything’s been washed, dried, put away, straightened, smoothed and aired.
i’m too tired to nap, even.
i am a hard worker. :p

I am a homemaker too, it ain’t so bad. It just gets lonely during the day is all. But I cat a little furry feline to keep me company.
Yeah, it’s what i do best.
But yeah, during the cloudy days, when i’m alone, everything feels sad-
even something as not sad as baking sweets.
Also i think i may be a moron, an ingrate and a whiner. It’s okay for me to say this.
Honest.
Also, cats get on my nerves.
The locals have bad attitudes and crap crap in my tiny garden.

I like to read your stuff while listening to jazz. Right now it is Miles Davis - blues by five - and it is a perfect groove for this post. I like everything about this post but what I found especially entertaining was your crafty bake pan joke with “banana rectangle” as punch line.
It’s good to see you.
And you’ve paid me a huge compliment-
me & Miles.
Awesome!
That banana bread rectangle was gone by sunset.
It was very good.

I like how you can turn something that’s almost nasty into something delicious. It’s a good metaphor.
It is.
That wasn’t intentional.
i wish it was.
Then i’d truly have skillz.
