“so many winged creatures
I fear them”
In a few days thousands upon thousands of seventeen year cicadas are going to crawl out of the ground here on Cape Cod. I remember the last two times in 1991 and 1974. They are rather large and when they sing their song it sounds like a chain saw 2 feet from your head for about a month. You can’t open your car windows or you end up with dozens of them in your car and my air conditioning is broken. So those two lines really hit home with me. At least they don’t sting.
Wow, that’s crazy, exciting, gross.
Even without the sting, their size would keep me indoors for sure.
Scary!

I’m mixed on this point – some of those winged creatures are good, they pollinate and make the blossoms turn to fruit and vegetables – others are just useless and scary.

Exactly. i agree with your observation. It’s just that
we live just down the lane from several pear orchards which mean bees, bees, bees.
Now i love to use bees in my writing but i am terrified of being stung.
And even though i’ve been stung before, i am terrified of it happening again.
i’ve totally built it up in my mind.
Plus, there are hornets with their heavy bodies.
Japanese fruit beetles.
Dragon flies, which are lovely, but primitive and gross looking.
All of these beings have such power over me.
That is my issue.
